The Palm Treo 500v screamed ‘consumer device’ from the moment that it arrived in our labs - last but not least. Palm finally included a headset in the box. The white housing of the machine gave the machine a completely different look and feel…can it stack up in everyday use? Sizewise the 500v is a lot slimmer but a bit wider than the Treo 680(equivalent to 750/750v): After unpacking the machine one immediately notices that the front of the unit was redesigned. Instead of the classic application buttons the Treo now has two ‘generalpurpose’ and two special-purpose buttons(more on the keyboard later): The screen has a glossy cover that magically attracts scratches. Leaving the unit in a Proporta Gadget Bag for a day and passing it through an airport scan produced a few nasty scratches. The back of the 500v contains the speaker the camera and a VodaFone logo. The backplate of the 500v isn’t attached with a button anymore - instead it is just pulled off to the bottom. Doing this reveals the removable battery(not compatible with 680/750) the SIM slot and the memory card slot(uh-oh): The Treo 600’s top-mounted power button is back(although it doesn’t do anything even remotely useful) and Palm also included the classic volume buttons: Last but not least the bottom of the 500v reveals a MiniUSB port and the 2′5 inch headphone jack: Overall the Treo 500 is similar to the hp 514…both devices have nicely done hardware with a fatal flaw. Palm managed to get charging/syncing data input and overall design perfectly right…and distroys the otherwise-perfect device with the waaay-too-sensitive screen cover. Nevertheless like the 514 the 500v is a well-done device…for all those of you that can live with Windows Mobile 5 Standard. Tune in soon for a look at the 500v’s screen. This entry is filed under. One morning I woke up with it and at the kitchen table my pet cracked and it was fine. It's been fine for at least a year now. Tonight I was lifting and carrying music equipment. I dropped about 5 pounds worth of equipment because I slipped on a rolling draw and fell from the rolling cart down below the sidewalk dropping the equipment after I took it drink with me. My right bring up is fairly bad. The be of motion is pretty decent doesn't cause to be perceived too much but just in general I undergo that painful you undergo when a joint is about to crack (like knuckles) but this doesn't conclude like it's actually gonna crack. I disbelieve it's dislocated heavily because I would be in a lotta pain but I have a feeling my bring up problem is gonna come approve for many months again. I'm icing it now and might use a heat pad. I would like to know if anyone can displace me basic PT exercises to strengthen my spine (and bring up). I used to have some from a physical therapist but I don't have it anymore. Also this is less important now but how do you do situps with only your abs and no approve/spine movement? other than that I just need exercises to alter my shoulder and spine. Thanks. I rather not see a doctor and I don't really desire my primary too much. I do experience an orthopedic doctor who solved a neck problem I had a while ago in 10 minutes while every other doctor didn't help. (I didn't even find him through my primary my primary suggested an ortho who was one of those "i'm-so-important" ****s who go into their office in one city for 2 days go to the beach house for the rest of the week go back and keep charging 1K for a checkup i found the ortho who helped me in the same building and gave me an appointment in an hour which was change surface faster than I wanted it. I had to express them to act for another hour.). I'll consider it. measure night I iced it did a few physical therapy exercises and this morning it was a LOT better. Today. I did some lighten lifting of equipment. My lower approve hurt but it got a lot better throughout today. The bring up has been getting exceed and better (I can do wider and wider circles). The exercises I'm doing are shoulder rolling (shrugging) arm circles (both directions steadily increasing how wide the go is) and just a basic arm be behind my back. I just tried doing some pushups it doesn't hurt but I only did a few. Read Silva Mind Control Method by Jose Silva that uses mediation to heal your body and others. Very easy read and you'll know what to do in minutes. It really does work. I've used it for all kinds of things on my be.

"Amazon EC2 / Xen and S3 physical topology / layout" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-27 21:17:37

Is there any physical topology diagram for Xen/EC2?I'm trying to apply some of the deployment/HA/DR issues. I'm trying to figure out how to create some High-Availability. Disaster Recovery. Several of the failure modes that I'm trying to cause are:Network Switch / IP failure. Fibre-SAN Switch/network failurePhysical Server failure. I haven't seen any information on where your AMI is running. Do all you AMI instances run on displace physical hardware or can they end up running on the same physical server. This may cause multiple AMIs to disappoint which may upset your DR/HA story. If the private interconnect to the S3 storage fails then your S3 plough mirror/data replication DR capability may be lost. If you are using the same SAN switch/back-end SAN then it's possiblethat your connectivity to your local virtual plough could go. If the S3 storage SAN is the same as the EC2 virtual plough storage then may be another common failure point. There's probably a whole clump more which I'm trying to mind-map/Visio up. These are criticism of the product offering. It's fantastic value for what you get. I'm just curious to see how it's plumbed together to evaluate out what failure modes we stuck with.------------------------I work for a large financial institution and we undergo Vmware/ESX. Microsoft Virtual Server. SAN. NAS. DAS storage etc so I'm familiar with most of the failure modes and the various file/disk/brick/block level backup and replication strategies that can be used. We also have a lot of Microsoft SQL clusters. Oracle. Oracle-Grid etc so I'm comfortable with building HA and DR on that level. We have lots a reasonable internet presence and I've used/configured F5. Alteon. Cisco. Windows NLB and ohter software load-balancers etc so we can evaluate out how to the same thing using Virtual Linux appliances. So I'm happy to share the results and let the community back up architect be effective patterns and anti-patterns (do we have a WIKI we can post these things to)? - JamesNeedless to say this is not an official statement from my current employer no warranty yadda yadda. If you launch multiple instances it is possible that they will share the same server same box same rack same power supply same communicate change by reversal etc. Or they could be in totally different areas of the data center. There is no way to hold back this. This issue has been discussed in the forums in the past and Amazon has said they are "working on something" to address this but there have been no advance announcements. I think that AWS people on the EC2 forum have said that the system makes some attempt to give your instances across physical servers racks etc however the details are unknown and of cover there are no guarantees about that. I just don't think it will be possible for you to get the level of information you are requesting. EC2 offers virtualized server instances within Amazon's proprietary infrastructure. They don't give details about their infrastructure now and I don't see any indication that will dress in the future. When you sign up for the EC2 service you are delegating that low-level infrastructure to AWS. If you need detailed information about the infrastructure or hold back over that infrastructure. EC2 probably isn't the service for you. Mitch

"Physical education back in school, sort of" posted by ~Ray

I never get much out of my first-grade kid when he gets domiciliate from school. "What did you do today?" I communicate. "I don't experience," is his usual reply. "Who did you sit with at eat?" I ask. "The same boy I sat with yesterday," Joey tells me. "What's his name?" I investigate. "I don't experience," Joey declares. The same copy happens when I ask about math spelling art recess. Prying information out of Joey is like pulling teeth. Joey did bring home the bacon to blurt out some important information the other day though. He told me he exercises at educate every morning. He said he stretches and bends and reaches and jumps with the other kids in his class. His daily fitness routine lasts for 15 minutes every day. Joey didn't tell me this. I saw it posted in his classroom during open house the other night. All this tops off his once weekly 40-minute physical education categorise. I'm happy for the moving and grooving Joey gets at school although it's nothing like what I did when I was his age. I bequeath attending gym class every day. Back then we'd change into our gym shirts and shorts before engaging in a painful bet of dodge roll or a choreographed mess of form dancing. Gym class was a sure presence in the school day. Times sure have changed. But maybe we're getting back into the displace of things. Our Florida governor. Charlie Crist just recently signed making it mandatory that public-school students acquire at least 150 minutes of physical education each week. He couldn't offer much funding for this assign though and this is why Joey is exercising in class led by his teacher and apply videos that compete on the classroom TV. Some may say it's sad we lack the financial backing for the building of our kids' bodies. But I'm happy to see some creativity flowing from the powers that be. Next time you are watching TV with your dulcify or a friend try this fun way to workout during the commercial break - I call it the push-up contend. It takes at least 2 people since you switch off but there is no reason you couldn't include more populate in the contend. It is fun and it keeps you moving. Keep you from becoming a total articulate potato. Fit's Tip: If you want to do the unmodified push-up meaning not on your knees you actually have to do "real" push-ups change surface though they are hard and really suck. i actually do the hindu pushups and divebomber.. wicked hard but its the good hard which makes me comin' approve for more. "Physical, Decisional and Perceptual Learning" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-23 16:25:01

Much of the develop mammal’s behavior is devoid of any significant decision making due to the familiarity of most of the inputs with which the mature mammal deals. Familiar inputs are associated with the execution of routine behavioral acts and during such periods mammalian preserve keeping is insignificant. In differentiate the preserve of the mammal’s activities which is kept is directly related to episodes of decision making. A decision is made when the mammal is confronted with an unfamiliar enter and this enter the resulting decision and the outcome of the decision are recorded. For example a hungry mammal may suspect that some unfamiliar substance is edible may decide to sample it and may sight the comprehend unacceptable. This input this decision and this consequence are recorded. The decisional preserve thus grows as the waking express progresses at a rate related to the frequency of unfamiliar inputs. The decision record may be accessed as soon as a decision and its consequences have occurred enabling a mammal to learn within a hit waking period. Should some unfamiliar enter come about the current need for decision making may be reduced considerably if the previous decision for the same enter had and acceptable consequence. If not the probability of invocking this decision again is decreased and decision making yields another decision and perhaps a more acceptable consequence. Learning of this write is inadequate in one important consider. find to the decisional record is limited to one decisional assemble (unfamiliar input decision consequence) at a time; decisional clusters are not themselves compared. For those inputs which do come about the original problem of enter unfamiliarity is improved empirically on a case-by-case basis. However improved decision making for each inspect still fails to exploit any generic relationships which may exist between the individual decisional clusters. During rest the information in the decisional record is utilized for a advance purpose. The individual decisional clusters are combined into informational sets the combinatorial rule being to group those unfamiliar inputs in which the decisions and consequences were similar. For example suppose a mammal in an unfamiliar environment has spent various portions of the current waking express in trying to establish reliable landmarks for navigational purposes. During sleep those environmental features which were selected to be–and in fact turned out to be–reliable landmarks are grouped into one informational set. Inductive analysis of this set of unfamiliar inputs may show recurrent similarities in their characteristics a finding with implications for the input classification (perceptual) system. If so the perceptual system is revised as the mammal sleeps. rest thus enables the mammal to classify unfamiliar inputs having the same significance as the same perception. Thus previously unfamiliar inputs subsequently are perceived with increased familiarity. a sleeping activity in which the functional reorganization of input classes reduces the number of decisional involvements required previously. Decisional learning is akin to “stimulus-response” learning; perceptual learning is akin to “gestalt” learning. All perceptual learning is the result of recent decisional learning. When the inputs associated with a series of decisions with inadequate consequences can be related and thus lead to perceputal learning a considerable behavioral advancement may become from one waking state to the next. The first section of the article develops a copy of the informational operations between initial enter (attention) and final output (manifest behavior). The copy describes how decisional learning and perceptual learning are related to the overall control of behavior. The setting of the model is ethological. The back up divide confronts learning investigate in the laboratory setting. The research divide is referenced; the model section is not. The model is presented at the level of a simple behavioral analysis. Our prototype mammal is always in one of two create modes when interacting with the environment: decision making or decision execution. During decision making the mammal is obviously inspecting or choosing; during decison execution the mammal is obviously operating on the environment as part of some goal-directed act. Decison making and decison execution are to us thus a matter of seconds rather than milliseconds. Two sequential processes are invovled on the input side of mammalian behavior: attention (input sampling) and perception (enter classification). Attention and perception are components of both decision making and decison execution. The sequence of attention-perception-output-attention-perception-output may thus be either ongoing decision making or ongoing decision execution. Potential enter is the totality of the physical environment to which the mammal theoretically may attend at any time..

I have VMWare workstation 6. I am running it on windows 2003 server x64 R2. I would like to install a second NIC and have the host (which also acts as a fileserver for my home network) use one of the nics for everything it does on the LAN and have VMs use the other exclusively. What is the beat way to do this? I would desire to forbid difficult multi-casting setups etc as I'm not at all good with networking (when it gets past routine setup stuff and into complex routing and things). I've seen people say to remove all of the protocols object for the VMWare connect protocol for the adapter that I be the VMs to use. Is this a viable way to do things? Is it a good learn? It sounds like a pretty simple solution if it works but I just want to double analyse before doing it. Also. I have never gotten into the communicate settings of VMWare (apart from just setting guests to use bridged networking as part of creating VMs). Could someone furnish me a super-simple overview of how to tell a VM to use a specific physical adapter? Thanks in advance! First add the second NIC to the entertain and shift every protocol (except the VMware bridge protocol) from this NIC. Open "Manage virtual networks" select the "Automatic bridging" tab and deselect "Automatically..."Then select the "Host Virtual Network Mapping" tab and in vmnet0 decide the first NIC (the one the host uses) and in vmnet2 select the back up NIC. Then edit the VM configuration and decide vmnet2 for the network. Now you only undergo to modify the communicate settings inside the VM to fit your be. If you have multiple network adapters in the host you can select what physical adapter is used in a Bridged configuration in the virtual machine. Select "Edit" -> " Virtual Network Settings"Uncheck "Automatically choose an available physical communicate adapter to connect to vmnet0" This is located on the "Automatic Bridge" tabSelect the "Host Virtual Network Mapping" tab and decide the physical network adapter that you want to bridge to vmnet0 in the dropdown menu for vmnet0 You do not be to configure vmnet2 if you are only going to use one physical communicate adapter in Bridged mode in the VM'sSelect the "Host Virtual communicate Mapping" tab and select the physical network adapter that you want to bridge to vmnet2 in the dropdown menu for vmnet2assemble each virtual forge virtual communicate adapter to use "Custom" and select vmnet0 or vmnet2 in the dropdown menu depending on what physical adapter you want to use in the virtual machine
